Printers: bills and KOTs

Connect thermal bill and KOT printers over Wi-Fi/LAN, USB or Bluetooth, route each station to its printer, and fix common printing problems.

Which printers work

QRkey prints to standard ESC/POS thermal printers, the kind most restaurants already use, in 58 mm (2-inch) and 80 mm (3-inch) widths.

ConnectionWindows / Mac appAndroid app
Wi-Fi / LAN (network)YesYes
USBYesYes, with a USB OTG cable or a tablet with a USB port
Bluetooth—Yes, classic Bluetooth printers (not Bluetooth LE only)

In a plain browser, printing goes through the browser's print dialog. For silent, automatic printing of bills and KOTs, use the desktop or Android app.

1. Add the printers in QRkey

  1. Open Settings → Tables and kitchen → Printers and add one printer for bills and one for each kitchen or bar station.
  2. Set Connection to Network for a Wi-Fi/LAN printer and enter its IP address (the port is usually 9100), or to Direct for a USB or Bluetooth printer.
  3. Under Connected to computer or phone, pick the device that sends jobs to this printer, usually the billing computer.
  4. Pick the paper size, then link each kitchen station to its printer, so KOTs go to the right place.

On the desktop and Android apps, the printer form marks · this device next to the computer or phone you're using, so you can tell machines apart.

2. On Android

  1. Open the QRkey app's Printers page (from the app's settings, the welcome guide or the launcher shortcut).
  2. Tap Add printer, then pick Bluetooth (paired printers, or Scan for printers; try PIN 0000 or 1234), Wi-Fi / LAN (scans your network for port 9100, or enter the IP), or USB (plug it in and allow access).
  3. Set the paper width, tap Test print, and set one printer as default.
  4. Under Prints for, add the POS printer names this printer should handle, such as "Kitchen" or "Bill".

The Printers page also shows the last 20 jobs with their result, with Retry on failed ones, and can open a cash drawer connected to the printer.

3. On Windows and Mac

Install the desktop app on the billing computer and sign in. Network printers work straight away. For a USB printer, install the printer's driver first, then choose it in the app's printer settings and print a test page.

One device per printer

Let one computer or phone handle each printer, usually the billing counter. If two devices both print the same KOTs, the kitchen gets duplicates. The Android app skips a job it has already printed, but it's simplest to keep one device in charge.

If something doesn't print

  • Network printer: print the printer's self-test page (hold the feed button while switching on) to see its IP address, and check the computer or phone is on the same Wi-Fi.
  • Bluetooth: pair it in the QRkey app, keep the printer within a few metres, and switch it off and on if it was paired to another phone.
  • Blank or garbled print: check the paper is thermal paper the right way up, and the paper width matches the printer.
  • Android stops printing when the screen is off: allow notifications and set battery to Don't optimise for QRkey (the welcome guide walks you through it).
